I finish the last of my trip reports today with a look at Fort Sumter. This is another "side trip" on our (non-comprehensive) coaster tour of the Eastern seaboard, but this one is not only historical, it has a Disney connection!
Fort Sumter is an island at the mouth of the Charleston harbor, and it was where the first shots of the Civil War were fired. As we hear in both Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln and the Hall of Presidents, "the cannons spoke for war." Geek that I am, I repeated that phrase while at Sumter a few times. By the end I was doing it just to get the requisite eyeroll from my wife!
When you live in the simulated bubble that is Orlando, where very little is actually real, seeing something both real and historical (not to mention old) is viscerally exciting. It was to our 9-year old, too (though less true for our five year old).
Thanks for coming along for a virtual ride on our coaster road trip! We are energized and ready to focus exclusively on the theme park world again :)
