2013 Highlights 35 Years of Inspirational Art, Ocean Education and Community Awareness by Marine Life Artist Wyland and Wyland Galleries
National Mayor’s Water Challenge, School Art Contest, Award-Winning Conservation Documentary, Twentieth Anniversary of Wyland Foundation
and Thirty- Five Gallery Shows Featured

LAGUNA BEACH, Calif. — His art is big: on the sides of skyscrapers, roofs of sports arenas, school walls, the U.S. National Mall in Washington, D.C., and just about everywhere in between. But for environmental artist Wyland, the last 35 years have been about making a statement about how one person can change the world. He has helped shaped the way millions see, understand, and appreciate the oceans and planet.

"This is a distinguished accomplishment in the art world — and one we look forward to sharing with great pride," Wyland said as he begins a year of special events, gallery shows and celebrations marking this milestone. "That's because our mission of showcasing the world's finest marine life art, introducing people to the power of nature, and giving back to communities everywhere has redefined what an artist and an art gallery can mean to the world.”

In 1978, Wyland started a small gallery in the renowned art community of Laguna Beach, California. As the response to his art and mission grew, Wyland Galleries expanded across the United States, from Hawaii to Florida. Today, these galleries have become destinations on the itineraries of many travelers. Collectors and fans around the world have Wyland’s inspirational art.

Wyland Foundation
An important aspect of Wyland's work has been his non-profit Wyland Foundation. 2013 will mark the 20th anniversary of the foundation, which uses art and science education to inspire millions of young people to become stewards for the environment. As part of his commitment, in the past 20 years, Wyland has held art clinics for more than one million kids in all 50 states and many countries around the world.

The Wyland Foundation has helped children and families around the nation to rediscover the importance of healthy oceans and waterways through public art programs, classroom science education, and live events. The foundation gives children the tools they need to become more creative, positive, and solution-oriented. The foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and has worked directly with more than one million children since its inception in 1993.
For more info on the foundation and for a video message from Wyland see: www.wylandfoundation.org.

National Mayors Challenge for Water Conservation
In 2013, Wyland will lead his second annual “National Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation” a friendly, community-based competition where cities across the nation are encouraged to be “water wise.” With the Wyland Water Mobile Learning Experience, an 18 wheel, mobile interactive, “hands-on” educational display and with the support of Toyota, the United States Environmental Protection Agency, Forest Service, National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration, National League of Cities, Rain Bird Corporation, CH2M Hill, and Lowe’s Home Improvement Stores, mayors and civic leaders nationwide will challenge their residents to conserve water, energy and other natural resources on behalf of their city through a series of informative events and online pledges. Last year, the challenge awarded more than $50,000 in prizes, including a Toyota Prius, Lowe’s gift cards, custom lawn and garden irrigation and water-saving fixtures, to 1,200 residents in U.S. cities. Info at www.mywaterpledge.com.

Blues Planet: Sounds: Award-Winning Documentary on Tour
In 2012, Wyland put together the award-winning documentary called, “Blues Planet: Sounds,” a new documentary narrated by famed oceanographer Dr. Sylvia Earle. This powerful and moving visual masterpiece sheds light on the environmental challenges of our day and the many people who through art, music, and science are creating an environmental renaissance. Original music from the Wyland Blues Planet Project by Taj Mahal, Rod Piazza, Steve Turre, Nick-I, and 40 blues icons, recorded in New Orleans on the anniversary of the Gulf Oil Disaster. This film will be shown at various venues across the county in conjunction with Wyland’s gallery shows and will be used for fund raising and community awareness for local water and ocean charities. See the movie trailer here: www.wyland.com/wylandrecords.

Neverending Pie Buffet (Review)

The Great American Pie Festival is an annual event held in Orlando and Kissimmee. It's a multiday affair, with pie baking, judging, and competitions. There are also cooking demos, entertainment, and a host raft of events at a hotel (the Caribe Royale). But for many, the signature event is the all you can eat pie buffet, which is exactly what it sounds like. For $10, you can gorge until you can eat no more.

There's pie from perhaps a dozen bakers (most of them national brands, but I didn't know all the names, so some might be local), all set up on tables. You stroll up, grab one or more in plastic clamshells, and move to the next booth to repeat. There must have been a few dozen different varieties, between all the booths.

Your $10 ticket includes a bottled water (or three or four, depending on how many tickets your cashier hand you), as well as unlimited coffee and iced coffee. The Publix booth offers ice cream (and some toppings), and the Cabot booth had cheese samples, a new thing this year. It had the longest lines.

The event is always popular, and this year it was more crowded than ever. If it hasn't already reached the maximum capacity for this location in Celebration, it's awfully close. The picnic area where it's held was overflowing this year.

As always, though, it was well worth the money. I look forward to this every year!

Chuy's Mexican Food in Kissimmee - A Review

A chain called Chuy's (which started in Austin TX in 1982) has recently opened near Walt Disney World. You could think of it as something like El Torito, Acapulco's, or a billion other chain Mexican restaurants, but the reality is, this one is the best of the chains, in terms of food. Fresh, flavorful, and with every element of our visit perfect.

We dropped by at 6:30 on a Sunday - the parks were all still open, so the crowds might get worse later. For now, we had no wait for a table, but it was almost full inside. It's only been open for several weeks, and it's located quite close to WDW along US-192-West, in Kissimmee (if you know the area, a new Target opened up recently across the street).

The decor is crowded, cluttered, and eclectic, a bit like House of Blues in affect but nothing like it in style. It's more whimsical. One room was chock full of hubcaps on the ceiling!!

They make tortillas right on the spot, which I didn't notice until we were on the way out. I should have ordered the fajitas (which in fairness the server did recommend).

What we did order was superior. The guacamole ($5) was an effective pair to the free chips and salsa. My wife, a salsa expert, found this one among her very favorites. A creamy jalepeno dip was also brought out for us - think of this as looking like ranch dressing but tasting like heaven. Great on the chips AND on the food, which came next.

My wife had the Chicka Chicka Boom Boom (I think about $11), a chicken burrito with a fiery kick. Not spicy just for the sake of being spicy, but actually having flavor. I can tell you this is rare. We love Mexican food and don't find very much authentic stuff out here in Florida, but this one was nice.

I had a combo plate ($10). The ground beef taco was divertingly tasty, and I gobbled it up before noticing I had started. The chicken chalupa (better thought of as a tostada) was also excellent, though this one didn't disappear before I knew what happened. I didn't even have room to taste my enchilada!

Bottom line: this is probably my favorite chain Mexican food in the world. It also beats many of the family-run Mexican restaurants we knew growing up in Southern California. We will be back for sure!

Fantasy of Flight now open only Thurs-Sun, effective May 6

Press Release:

POLK CITY (April 25, 2013) - Effective May 6, Fantasy of Flight is introducing new operating hours.  The attraction will open Thursday through Sunday, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.  All previously scheduled group reservations or events will take place as planned.

Fantasy of Flight creator and founder Kermit Weeks also announced plans to make the most of the new schedule to refine the popular attraction elements and develop new experiences that speak to the attraction's mission: to "Light that Spark Within."

The aviation attraction opened in 1995 as a way to display and share Weeks' growing vintage airplane collection to the public.  It has now become the world's largest private collection, rivaling many national museums, and is also home to the World's Greatest Aircraft Collection - a not-for-profit organization dedicated to "rebuilding and reliving the passion of the past."

Weeks said, "Over the years I've realized there are a number of people fascinated with aircraft but there are even more fascinated by flight.  Flight is a powerful metaphor, which more than anything symbolizes pushing our boundaries, reaching beyond ourselves, and freedom."

To take advantage of this opportunity, Weeks decided to close on days that had not been traditionally as busy and use the time to focus on development.  "We see the new operating schedule as a win-win for both the public and us," Weeks said.  "By reducing our days open, we will be able to deliver more focus to our daily customers and use the closed days to focus on developing an even better product that will touch even more people."

Part of the change in operating hours has necessitated a reduction in workforce.  "After weighing options for several months, some difficult decisions have been made," Weeks said.  "But from change comes opportunity."

Fantasy of Flight is the world's only aviation attraction and was voted Orlando's "Best Kept Secret" four years in a row.  The new schedule will continue to deliver Fantasy of Flight's popular attractions, including the Wing WalkAir Ropes Course & Zip Line, the Art Deco-themed Compass Rose diner, Fantasy of Flight gift shop, scheduled tours, the new Golden Hill storage facility and Flight of the Day.

"My commitment to moving the mission forward is stronger than ever," Weeks said.  "More than just an aviation museum, we are truly an 'Attraction on a Higher Plane.'  I'm very proud of what we've accomplished so far, but even more excited about what I know we can create in the future!"

General admission to Fantasy of Flight is $29.95 for adults and $15.95 for children, ages 6-12, plus tax.  Annual passes are available. Hours are 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Thursday through Sunday.  Admission to Wing WalkAir Ropes Course is $12.00 per person plus tax, Wing WalkAir Zipline is $15.00 per person plus tax and Wing WalkAir Annual Passes are $64.95 per person plus tax.  Biplane rides, through Waldo Wright's Flying Service, and hot air balloon experiences are available for an additional fee.

The Thursday, April 25 events at the Sea Dog in Orlando begin at 4:00pm with a ribbon cutting by the Orlando Regional Chamber of Commerce.  Beer and food specials will run throughout the evening.

Press Release: Food & Wine Conference July 19-21 at Rosen Shingle Creek

Press Release:

ORLANDO (April 23, 2013) -  Technology has changed the wine-and-dine game dramatically. The smart food industry professional of the digital age must be social-media savvy to tap into the now limitless potential to grow and thrive.

To help those with a vested interest to get there, Sunday Supper LLC introduces the new Food & Wine Conference, July 19-21 at Rosen Shingle Creek in Orlando. The cutting-edge summit will bring together bloggers, small business owners, marketing professionals, winemakers, chefs and other key players to teach and learn about making the most of online opportunities to grow their businesses.

Food bloggers and others with online outlets in particular will gain insight into search engine optimization, social media marketing, food photography, effective writing and networking with others in the wine-and-dine industry.

Headlining the event is chef, television personality and cookbook author Sara Moulton.  Moulton recently kicked off her third season as host of public television's "Sara's Weeknight Meals." As a protégée of Julia Child, founder of the New York Women's Culinary Alliance, executive chef of Gourmet magazine, food editor of ABC-TV's "Good Morning America" and the host of several popular shows on the Food Network during that channel's first decade, this teacher at heart has kept her mission the same for decades:  to help the home cook get dinner on the table.
The conference is the brainchild of Isabel Laessig, Tampa, Fla., whose Sunday Supper Movement on Twitter @FamilyFoodie was started in 2011 and currently has more than 2 million followers.  "I started the Sunday Supper Movement when my oldest daughter left for college," said Isabel. "Before she left, I asked her what she would miss most about home.  Her answer: 'The time we spend in the kitchen.  I can't imagine not being here for Sunday Supper.'  It really spoke to me to realize that my 18-year-old's fondest memories were the ones we created in the kitchen.  I started my blog the day after she left and started tweeting about our family's #SundaySupper every Sunday and a movement began."

As the Sunday Supper Movement grew, Isabel also befriended many bloggers and others in social media who were interested in how she started the movement and in learning more in general about how to make their various businesses a success.  She created the Food & Wine Conference as a way to bring these bloggers and experts together to network and learn.

Additional top pros scheduled to share expertise at the conference are: Michael Green, one of America's premiere wine and spirits celebrities who has been an expert for 19 years for Gourmet magazine and whose expertise is regularly sought for national news segments; Rosen Shingle Creek Executive Pastry Chef David Ramirez, captain of the 2009 USA Team to the internationally acclaimed Coupe du Monde chocolate and pastry competition in France; and Jaden Hair, food blogger at Steamy Kitchen and chef with a monthly cooking show on Daytime TV.

Attendees will learn the ins and outs of a variety of food business subjects, from how to write a cookbook to food blogging, networking, promotional strategies and business planning.

There also will be food samples, live chocolate demonstrations and social networking events to mix plenty of pleasure with the lively and diverse business at hand.

ABOUT THE CONFERENCE

The Food & Wine Conference takes place the weekend of July 19-21, 2013 at Rosen Shingle Creek, 9939 Universal Blvd., Orlando, FL 32819, and is sponsored by Sunday Supper LLC.

For information on registration and a detailed list of guest speakers, celebrity appearances and seminar schedules, visit www.foodandwineconference.com.

  • Events are triggered by holding up an RFID-enabled card to a reader, which causes a physical event to occur (a chest opens up, an animatronic panther or parrot moves and speaks, etc).
